High School East Showcases 'Songs for a New World'

HSE performs its annual student-run musical production.

On Friday and Saturday night, the lecture hall of was transformed into a cabaret as the students performed "Songs for a New World," this year's student-run musical.

"Songs for a New World" is composer/lyricist Robert Jason Brown's abstract musical originally performed off-Broadway. It is a vocally demanding score consisting of a collection of songs, performed both as solos and group numbers, each telling a story connected by the central theme of surviving unexpected moments in life.

According to Leah Kugler, this year's director of the student-run production, "Zach, the music director, and I chose this show to showcase all the talent here at High School East and give everyone a chance to shine."

The cast of 10 students consisted of Cara Laban, Christine Grosso, Danielle Jenkin, Gabrielle Persichilli, Jackie Bakewell, Josh Estes, Matt Jurman, Rachel Karmel, Veronica Fox and Zach Zadek.

As this production was student-run, numerous students were also responsible for the music, lighting, choreography, sound, playbill and all aspects of turning out this stellar performance.
