Melville Firefighters Battle Weekend Car Fires

The incidents occurred Friday and Sunday.

The Melville Fire Department battled two car fires over the weekend just days after facing a blaze that destroyed two vehicles outside a Melville home on Wednesday.

According to fire officials, the first blaze broke out Friday evening outside a commercial building on Marcus Drive. Melville Firefighters responded to find the unoccupied car fully engulfed in flames in the parking lot of the building at 10:40 p.m.

Ten firefighters responded with two engines and had the blaze quickly under control. The Suffolk Police Arson Squad was requested to investigate the cause of the fire.

All units were under the command of chief Jason Bernfeld directed units with assistant chiefs Paul Mahler and Chris Nolan.

Firefighters responded to another car fire Sunday afternoon on the North Service Road and Bagatelle Road. The driver noticed his car was on fire was able to pull over to the side of the road and escape uninjured at about 1 p.m.

About 15 fire and rescue personnel, three engines and two ambulances responded to the scene and quickly knocked down the flames. Units were under the direction of captain Billy Schmitt.
