Melville Lawyer Funding Cab Rides to Avoid Drunk Driving Accidents

A Melville lawyer who has seen one too many drunk driving cases come across his desk is now on a mission to prevent further alcohol-related fatalities.

Kenneth Mollins spent $10,000 to create a Safe and Sober program. After signing up through Mollins’ website, a person can receive one free cab ride home (up to $25) during the month of his or her birthday.

After years of seeing tearful families who have lost their children in alcohol-related car crashes, walk into his office, Mollins decided he had to do something about it.

One case that stood out for the Melville lawyer was an accident about six years ago in which four Long Island teens were killed on the Northern State Parkway near Roslyn by their intoxicated driver who was speeding down the highway and crashed into the divider. Mollins represented the mother and father of one of the victims.

“I still keep the photos of the crash at my desk as a reminder. It was so horrific. When you look at them, it’s like looking at death,” he said. “After looking at those pictures year after year, I decided it was time to do our part.”

His law firm is looking to further build the initiative by asking other businesses to get involved.

“If more businesses join we can expand the program and offer cab rides for parties, or just for people at a bar who need a ride home.”

Mollins kicked off the program at Bracco's Restaurant and Bar in Freeport over Memorial Day weekend, a holiday when police typically see a spike in DWI and DUI arrests.
