Half Hollow Hills Marks National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month

October is newly designated as National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month. As a distinguished district, Half Hollow Hills prides itself on the emphasis placed on Character Education, beginning in the primary schools.
As noted in the District Calendar, “The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) was signed into law on September 13, 2010, and went into effect on July 1, 2012. The legislation amended State Education Law by creating a new Article 2, Dignity for All Students. It combats bias-based bullying, harassment, and discrimination in public schools, and includes awareness and sensitivity in the relations of people including individuals of different races, weights, national origins, ethnicity, religions or religious practices, mental or physical abilities, sexes, sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions.”
In the beginning of each school year, the District Code of Conduct is reviewed with students and families. This position of kindness, respect, and tolerance are important life lessons.
To illustrate, highlights are presented from Paumanok and Vanderbilt Elementary Schools:
Paumanok Elementary School implemented a school-wide campaign, “got kindness? Paumanok does!” on the first Friday of every month. Students, faculty, and staff all don the tees with the message.
Vanderbilt Elementary School introduced their Character Education program with a fun, interactive Simon Sez assembly led by the master Steve Max.
