Vanderbilt Holds 15th Annual Turkey Trot

Physical education department inspires students to live active lifestyles with 300-yard run.

The Vanderbilt Elementary School Physical Education Department recently held its 15th annual Turkey Trot Run. The 300-yard timed run is a means to inspire lifetime physical fitness and healthy lifestyles across each grade level.

students learn about the components of physical fitness, the various muscles used, and the importance of being physically active throughout the year.

One of the major components that the children practice every day is cardiovascular fitness or aerobic fitness. The Turkey Trot allows the students to run, jog or sprint the course with intense aerobic movements. All students are rewarded for finishing the race with a certificate of accomplishment, and a sense of pride that the school experiences together.  Boys and girls who finish with the three fastest times in each grade (first through fifth) are recognized with an additional certificate and a prize.

“The children train and practice weeks before the race during our physical education classes.  The students are extremely motivated by having their scores posted, and being recognized by their peers as well,” physical education teacher Amanda Strack said.

“This was the first time we had three students from the same family come in first place on 3 different grade levels. Congratulations go out to Marco, Frankie, and Louie Possillico for their outstanding effort,” added physical education teacher John Schroeder.
