Youth Service Day Inspires Play in HHH

A group of 30 students from Half Hollow Hills School District is putting their bowling skills to the test in order to help build a playground for children with mental disabilities.

In honor of Youth Service Day, the Half Hollow Hills Kids Care club, a community service organization led by sophomore Rachel Shuster, is hosting a . They money raised will go to the Association for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS) to help the association build a playground at its school.

The playground isn’t an ordinary jungle gym. Complete with sound, touch pads and other modes of sensory equipment, it will also be used as a learning tool for the students.

The KidsCare club visited the ACDS school to work with the students and get to know their needs.

“It was a really nice experience. We worked with adults, and kids our age and older. It was really cool because we saw that we can relate to them and they had a lot of fun,” Shuster said.

Shuster started the KidsCare club when she was in the sixth grade. At the time, it was made up of just a few girls. Now a sophomore in high school, the club has grown to 30 members with students of all ages.
