61-Year-Old Woman Killed by Stray Bullet in Harlem: Police

The woman was playing cards with her friends in Colonel Charles Young Playground when she was hit in the neck by a stray bullet.

HARLEM, NY — Police are investigating the death of a 61-year-old woman who was shot in the neck Saturday night, police told Patch.

Police responded to Colonel Charles Young Playground around 11:45 p.m. to find Odessa Simms unresponsive and unconscious suffering a gunshot wound to the neck, police said. Simms was transported to Harlem Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Simms and her friends were playing cards at the park when a fight broke out elsewhere within the park. During the fight somebody started to shoot, fatally wounding Simms, the New York Times reported.

“She’s the best person in the world,” Basil Simms, her husband, told the New York Times. “She loved to cook. She could make anything, and anything she made was good.”

Police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the shooting.
