Art Installation To Grace Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park

Eight site-specific sculptures will pop up in the Central Harlem park on June 16.

HARLEM, NY — A year-long art installation is coming to Central Harlem's Marcus Garvey Park this month, the Studio Museum in Harlem announced this week.

Artist Maren Hessinger's "Monuments" will pop up in the park — located on Fifth Avenue between 120th and 124th streets — starting June 16, according to a press release. The installation will feature eight site-specific sculptures that reflect the landscape of the park.

A press release describes the installation as a "project made in Harlem and for Harlem."

"Transforming sites in Marcus Garvey Park both physically and psychologically, Monuments is a testament to community and to the human interaction with the natural world around us," reads a museum press release.

Hassinger's sculptures will be created by the artist with the aid of volunteers including neighborhood residents and participants in the Studio Museum’s teen programs, according to a press release. Some examples of the sculptures include a cube reflecting the park's chess tables, a mound corresponding with a rocky outcropping and rectangular sculptures near park flower beds.
