A visionary multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader whose music has never been easy to categorize — and has never needed to be — Peter Apfelbaum is one of the most adventurous and joyful figures in American jazz. A product of Berkeley's legendary Jazz Project, he has spent decades exploring the endless territory where jazz, world music, avant-garde composition, and pure improvisational energy converge. He is the founder and leader of the Hieroglyphics Ensemble, a sprawling musical collective that has counted among its alumni Benny Green, Craig Handy, Steven Bernstein, and Joshua Redman. He has performed with Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Harry Belafonte, Bill Laswell, and Phish — and in the early 1990s, opened shows for the Grateful Dead. Peter Apfelbaum brings his full, extraordinary universe of sound to the Harlem Jazz Series on August 7, 2026.
