A pianist, composer, arranger, and sound designer whose career has taken him to the creative edge of jazz and kept him there, Rod Williams has been one of New York City's most trusted and adventurous musical voices since arriving from Detroit in 1981 at the invitation of Henry Threadgill. He has performed alongside David Murray, Lester Bowie, Dewey Redman, Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman, and Geri Allen — and holds advanced degrees from Brooklyn College in electronic music and interactive media arts. Rod Williams brings his singular musical intelligence to Welcome to Harlem on November 20, 2026.

This award-winning solo show tells the largely unheard story of Shirley Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born politician of immigrant parents from Guyana and Barbados, who in the 20th Century, was the first African American woman to win a seat in Congress and the first to run for President of the United States. They called her the Black Joan of Arc. She called herself Fighting Shirley as she faced off against the political machine in the name of justice. Join us for this immersive, interactive solo show where actress and playwright Ingrid Griffith portrays Shirley Chisholm and 15 other characters as she traces Shirley Chisholm's journey from her childhood in Barbados to her rise in politics and activism in the United States.

What is a child? The answer may seem obvious—until we step inside the world of alternative spiritual communities, where children may be revered as enlightened masters, treated as spiritually unformed subordinates, or embraced as equal souls in small bodies.
Drawing on years of field research, this lecture explores how new religious movements (NRMs) understand childhood, and what those understandings mean for the children who grow up within them.
These patterns come to life through case studies of twelve movements, including the Children of God, Rajneeshpuram, the Twelve Tribes, ISKCON, the Raelian Movement, MOVE, and the Order of the Solar Temple. DR. SUSAN J. PALMER is a Canadian sociologist of religion whose primary research focus is new religious movements. She is an Affiliate Professor at Concordia University in Montreal and Principal Investigator of the SSHRC-funded research project “Children in Sectarian Religions and State Control” at McGill University’s School of Religious Studies, where she is also a member of the faculty. The author of twelve books on new religious movements, her notable works include "Moon Sisters, Krishna Mothers, Rajneesh Lovers" (Syracuse, 1994), "Aliens Adored: Raël’s UFO Religion" (Rutgers, 2004), "The New Heretics of France" (Oxford, 2011), and "Storming Zion: Government Raids on Religions" (Oxford, with Stuart Wright).This Autumn Wm Bruce Lecture is sponsored by the New York New Church Legacy Fund and the Swedenborg Library Chicago.&nbsp;

Join Vanderbilt University Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and Columbia University President Jennifer Mnookin for a conversation about the future of campus life.
College campuses have long been places where people encounter ideas, experiences, and perspectives radically different from their own. But how can universities make those differences a meaningful part of education rather than a source of deeper division? How should institutions balance free expression and civil discourse with the responsibility to create environments in which students can learn and thrive? And as artificial intelligence transforms how we teach, study, research, and even think, what aspects of a university education become more vital to our society?
Diermeier, an internationally renowned political scientist and management scholar, has made free expression and civil discourse central to his leadership at Vanderbilt. Mnookin, a nationally recognized legal scholar who became Columbia’s 21st president in 2026, previously served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she launched major initiatives around artificial intelligence, interdisciplinary research, and intellectual pluralism and dialogue across difference.
Hear them in conversation as they explore what universities owe their students and society, how campuses can engage in respectful disagreement across differences, and what it will take to create intellectually vibrant communities for the 21st century.

Mentored by the legendary Etta Jones, she has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club, the Blue Note, the Lenox Lounge's Zebra Room in Harlem, and stages far beyond. She hosts the beloved "Jazz Woman to the Rescue!" radio program on WHCR 90.3 FM and was named a 2024 Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists Association. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1971 and raised in Brooklyn, he trained at the Manhattan School of Music and has spent three decades dismantling the walls between jazz, hip hop, classical chamber music, and rock — one fearless composition at a time. With his ensemble Sound Liberation, he brings that boundary-erasing vision to Welcome to Harlem on November 6, 2026. Fitzgerald was celebrated for her extraordinary voice, impeccable swing, inventive scat singing, and seemingly effortless ability to transform a song. This concert takes those qualities not as museum pieces, but as creative provocations — jumping-off points for contemporary composers and performers.
