Mother, Boyfriend Charged in Death of 6-Year-Old Harlem Boy

The 6-year-old was brought to Mount Sinai St. Luke's hospital with multiple bruises on his body and a contusion on his head.

HARLEM, NY — Police announced the mother of a 6-year-old Harlem boy pronounced dead after being brought to the hospital covered in bruises has been charged in connection with his death.

Zymere Perkins was pronounced dead Monday at Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital, police told Patch. Perkins was brought to the hospital around 12:23 p.m. by his mother, police said. Perkins was suffering from multiple bruises to his body and a contusion to his head, police said.

Late Tuesday, police said Geraldine Perkins, 26, had been arrested and charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child. Rysheim Smith, 42, her live-in boyfriend according to reports, was also charged with the same count.

Police arrived at Perkins' home on the 600 block of West 135 Street after receiving a call of an unconscious boy. When police got to the scene, they found that Perkins' mother had already transported the boy to the hospital.

How Perkins sustained his injuries is unknown at this time, and police have launched an investigation into the incident, police told Patch.
