Dramatic Advances in Patient Care at Allure Group’s Harlem Center

Through staff increases, Allure provides dozens of good paying healthcare jobs for Harlem residents

In a remarkable turnaround since taking over the Harlem Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in 2013, The Allure Group has transformed the once-troubled nursing home into one of New York City’s premier subacute skilled nursing facilities, earning top marks from independent rating agencies and dramatically improving patient outcomes by significantly reducing rehospitalization rates.

When The Allure Group purchased the center five years ago, the business was failing, operating at a deficit while the physical facilities were suffering from years neglect and disinvestment. Worse, the patient care was substandard, rated as only a two-star facility on the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) five-star scale. Today, after millions of dollars of capital investment, Harlem Center is now a five-star quality rated facility and was recognized this year by the American Health Care Association’s Quality Initiative Program for improving patient performance and healthcare outcomes.

The Harlem Center was also honored this year with the skilled nursing industry’s prestigious Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award, which recognizes top-performing nursing facilities across the country.

Harlem Center is presently operating at better than 97 percent occupancy, up from 83 percent in 2013, and has produced a sharp reduction in the rehospitalization rate of its patients, lowing the key metric from 31 percent in 2013 to only 14 percent at the end of 2017. By way of comparison, the national average 30-day readmissions is 21 percent.

“The Harlem Center is a great success story by every conceivable measure, from the quality of our patient care to the enhanced facilities and amenities we offer our residents. We are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish here,” said Joel Landau, Founder and Owner of The Allure Group. “When we took it over we made a commitment not only to our patients but also to the community that we would make Harlem Center a first-rate nursing facility with top notch services and care, and we have delivered on that promise in a very short time.”

In addition to rehabilitating the Harlem Center’s building, Allure has made significant technology upgrades on the patient care side including state-of-the-art vital monitoring systems, case tracking software and the latest, cutting-edge rehabilitation machines. All of which have resulted in significantly improved patient outcomes and demonstrably lower hospital readmission rates.

At the same time, The Allure Group has nearly doubled the Harlem Center’s patient care staff, adding dozens of nursing, rehabilitation specialist and recreational therapy positions – all with the aim of improving quality of care. Many of the new positions have gone to Harlem residents thanks to Allure’s local hiring initiative in partnership with the Harlem Chamber of Commerce, creating good paying jobs for people in the community.

The Allure Group’s commitment to excellence goes beyond patient care, as the company is devoted to being a good neighbor within the Harlem community. Allure underwrites meals at local community centers, makes frequent donations to neighborhood churches, sponsors clothing drives and offers free school supplies for students. Harlem Center staff are active and regular volunteers at the Harlem Salvation Army and YMCA youth camps. The center also partners with public schools to bring in students who visit with elderly residents by participating in arts and crafts recreation. Harlem Center offers student internship opportunities and employment programs for single mothers and domestic violence survivors with and family counseling services.
