Fire Kills 1 In East Harlem High Rise, Officials Say

A 44-year-old woman died Sunday when a fire broke out in an apartment tower on First Avenue and East 109th Street.

EAST HARLEM, NY — One person died after a fire broke out in an East Harlem high-rise apartment tower, police and fire officials said.

The fire started on the seventh floor of 2130 First Avenue — a 32-story tower located between East 109th Street and Tito Puente Way, shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday — fire officials said. Firefighters had the fire under control by about 6:50 fire officials said.

A 64-year-old woman was found unresponsive and unconscious during searches of the building, police said. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. A 56-year-woman was brought to Mt. Sinai Hospital in stable condition for smoke inhalation, police said.

The city fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, officials said.
