Harlem Family Adopts Kitten Rescued on Subway Tracks

The kitten's tail and paw were partially amputated after she narrowly dodged the 7 train.

HARLEM, NY — The 7 train service was delayed for about an hour last month after New Yorkers noticed a small gray kitten playing on the subway tracks at the Fifth. Ave station. Transit workers and police officers rescued the kitten, who now has a permanent home in Harlem with a family that witnessed the event, NY Daily News reports.

The kitten, who is just a few months old, had her broken tail and paw partially amputated due to the accident.

Harlem resident Kim Estes convinced Animal Care & Control to let his wife and daughter adopt the kitten. Estes' daughter, Sólveig, named the kitten Matilda, after the Roald Dahl children's book.

“My daughter was there when the cat was spotted — she got attached,” Kim Estes told NY Daily News. “It was fate, you know.”

The family said Matilda is doing well and can fully jump and move around.
