Harlem Is Getting A Civil Rights Museum
New York's first museum dedicated to the Civil Rights movement is opening in Harlem this year.

HARLEM, NY — Manhattan is getting a new museum this year.
The Urban Civil Rights Museum is set to open in Harlem, located on West 125th Street near Malcolm X Boulevard, this fall.
The museum is part of the National Urban League’s new Urban League Empowerment Center, which opened this November.

The Empowerment Center is a mixed-use development that includes 170 units of affordable housing, along with retail space and offices for minority-owned businesses and nonprofit organizations.
Inside the new museum, visitors can expect a permanent interactive installation, as well as rotating exhibitions exploring topics such as slavery, the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement and modern social justice issues, according to Gothamist, which first reported this news.

"The Urban Civil Rights Museum in Harlem presents the history of the Northern civil rights movement," the museum says on its website.
"It is a cultural institution that educates, inspires and activates visitors through powerful storytelling, cultural engagement and collective action. Rooted in history and in Harlem, it stands as a local anchor and a global destination for learning, reflection and empowerment."
Museum officials have not yet announced an official opening date. Check back with Patch for updates as more details are released.
