ATV Rider Killed After Running Red Light In Harlem, Police Say

A 51-year-old Harlem man was killed after he drove his ATV through a red light on East 125th Street and collided with an SUV, police said.

HARLEM, NY — A man was killed as he drove an ATV through a red light in Harlem and collided with an SUV, throwing him from his vehicle, police said Thursday.

Police identified the man as Tony Harris, 51, of Lenox Avenue.

The collision took place around 1:59 a.m. last Thursday, Sept. 10, at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and East 129th Street. Harris was driving his 2018 SportMach ATV north on the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue when he entered the intersection against a red light, according to a police investigation.

Harris collided with a Nissan Rogue SUV driven by a 58-year-old man, which was heading west on 129th Street and had the green light. Harris's ATV was struck by the Nissan, sending him flying onto the hood of the SUV and then onto the pavement.

Police found Harris lying unconscious on the street, suffering from head trauma. He was taken to NYC Health & Hospitals/Harlem, where he was pronounced dead the following day.

The SUV driver stayed at the scene and was not injured. An investigation is ongoing, police said.
