Man Gets Life In Prison For Murder Of Girlfriend And Their Child

HARLEM, NY — A man is facing life in prison for murdering his former teacher and the child the two had together, the Manhattan District Attorney's office announced Tuesday.

Isaac Duran Infante, 24, was sentenced to 25-years-to-life in state prison Tuesday, prosecutors announced. He pleaded guilty to killing Felicia Barahona, 36 and Miguel Barahona, 4, in their Harlem apartment building on West 153rd Street between Broadway and Riverside Drive, prosecutors said.

"As families across New York welcome the arrival of the holiday season, one family continues to mourn the loss of a mother and child at the hands of Isaac Duran Infante," Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said in a statement. "This defendant committed not one but two inconceivable acts of murder against the mother of his child and his defenseless 4-year-old son, and he did so in one of the most violent and personal ways imaginable."

On the night of Dec. 22, 2016, Infante and Barahona were engaged in an argument when Infante wrapped an electric cord around the woman's neck and choked her to death, prosecutors said. Their 4-year-old son Miguel witnessed the murder and was crying in the bathroom, prosecutors said. Infante then suffocated the child and placed him face down in a bathub filled with several inches of water, prosecutors said.

Infante fled the apartment building while wearing Barahona's clothing and traveled to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to celebrate the holidays with his family, prosecutors said. While he was in Pennsylvania, Infante discarded Barahona's clothing, prosecutors said.

"That he fled across state lines and celebrated the Christmas holiday while his victims lay dead only serves to exacerbate the horror of this unconscionable crime," Vance said in a statement.

After the bodies were discovered, Infante returned to New York City, prosecutors said. Infante visited the NYPD's 30th Precinct posing as a grieving father and was arrested after questioning, prosecutors said.

Infante got Barahona pregnant in 2012 when he was her student at Clinton DeWitt High School in the Bronx, the New York Post reported in 2013.
