HARLEM, NY — The NYPD has released footage from the body-worn cameras of a police officer who shot an emotionally distressed man in Harlem.
On Oct. 22 two police officers responded to 10 W. 143rd St., between Broadway and Riverside Drive, around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a call that a man was trying to kill himself at that location, police said. When they knocked on the man's sixth floor apartment door he opened it while holding two knives, police said.
The man, now identified as 27-year-old Paris Cummings, was shot after running at the police officers while holding the weapons, police said.

The officer wearing the body camera instructs Cummings to drop the knives, according to the video. When Cummings ignores the commands, the officer draws his gun and shouts "put the f***ing knife down."

The police officers back further down the Harlem building's hallway, according to the body-camera footage. The officer wearing the body camera fires off one shot when Cummings exits his apartment into the hallway and runs toward him.
