Suspect In Harlem Murder Arrested In Virginia

A man accused of gunning down another man on a Harlem street in broad daylight last fall was arrested this week in Virginia, police said.

HARLEM, NY — A man accused of gunning down another man on a Harlem street in broad daylight last fall was arrested in Virginia, police said.

Andrew Paige, 44, a resident of Charlottesville, Va., was extradited to Manhattan and charged with murder Tuesday in the death of 31-year-old Jamel Smith.

Smith was fatally shot around 9:14 a.m. on Nov. 4, near the corner of West 112th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard — just a few blocks from his home.

Smith was walking to breakfast and had stopped to speak to a woman when he was shot, suffering severe wounds to the head and neck, the Daily News reported. The assailant reportedly fled on foot.

Smith was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, before his heartbroken family had had the chance to say goodbye, the Daily News reported.

Paige's arrest was based on surveillance footage showing him in the area at the time of the shooting, and evidence that he and Smith ran in the same circles in the neighborhood, an NYPD spokesperson said.
