Uptown March For Immigrants' Rights Planned
The march, starting in Harlem and continuing uptown, will call for the end of deportations and detention center quotas.

UPTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — The United States government mandates that every night at least 34,000 people must be held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers. It's the only such quota of it's kind among the entirety of law enforcement agencies in the nation.
The Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR) will hold a march April 23 — starting in Harlem and continuing uptown into Washington Heights and Inwood — to protest the "immoral and unjust" detention quota and the deportation of immigrants.
"If we do not mobilize to show our opposition, publicly and en masse, hate and state-sanctioned violence will continue to be normalized," Angela Fernandez, executive director and supervising attorney of the NMCIR, said during a press conference Wednesday.

The march will be held Sunday, April 23. Joining NMCIR as cosponsors of the march are organizations such as the National Action Network, Bronx Progressives, the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation, CUNY Dreamers, the Riverside Edgecombe Neighborhood Association (RENA) and Uplift NYC.
Marchers will gather at 145 St. Nicholas Ave. around noon and begin marching north at 1 p.m., according to march organizers.

"We demand an end to state-sanctioned violence, detention and deportation, the separation of families, and the countless violations immigrants are forced to endure," march organizers said.
Patch is scheduling an interview with organizers from NMCIR. This article will be updated with more detail.
