2019 Town Budget; Leaf Collection Reminder: Harrison Mayor

Want to know how to give back to the community? Call the town's Community Services Department for suggestions.

From Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont

I am happy to report that the Town Board recently adopted the 2019 budget. This budget maintains the excellent services that Harrison residents value and expect. Once again, this budget will keep the town under the state-mandated property tax cap that began in 2012. The adopted 2019 tax rate has an increase of 2.9%. Our NYS Retirement bill is fully funded, as it has been in previous years. Though it is permissible, we do not borrow to pay for pensions. Revenue has been conservatively budgeted as have expenditures.

Though the results of our 2018 budget year will not be available for several months, I do anticipate increased reserves. This will allow us to maintain our commitment to the Harrison taxpayer by providing improvements that help make us a community of distinction.

This year’s holiday celebration kickoffs were a big success. From candy canes to carolers and visits with Santa, both West Harrison and Downtown Harrison reveled in merriment. The hot chocolate flowed in West Harrison as Frosty the Snowman visited with residents, young and old. Elementary school choral groups serenaded the crowds, in Downtown Harrison, and the event concluded with the lighting of the Christmas tree and menorah. It was wonderful to see so many new visitors and familiar friends as these are the festivities that emphasize the true significance of the season. Both events did a great job reflecting the magic that the holidays should bring to us all.

As we gather this holiday season, and reflect on the good tidings of the past year, I encourage all residents to celebrate the spirit of giving. State and local organizations will be increasing their efforts to assist food banks and soup kitchens. Donating food, stocking shelves and feeding those in need are wonderful ways to volunteer your time and celebrate the spirit of generosity.

I would like to clarify that leaf collection is still in progress. Piled leaves should be left curbside for pick up. December 10 th reflected the last date in which leaves could be left in piles.

After December 10 th , leaves must be bagged. Our Highway Department is in the process of doing the final sweep, of our municipal roadways, and is continuing to pick up leaf piles. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

On a related note, to expedite the leaf collection process, our DPW Commissioner asks that residents remove all rocks, bottles, branches and other debris, take leaves to the curb and avoid parking on or around the piles. It is also important that leaves are not placed in the roadway or in the storm drains or catch basins, as this may cause flooding. Thank you for your cooperation.
