$4.4 Million Homeland Security Grant To Westchester County

The money is meant for emergency preparedness and counterterrorism efforts.

HARRISON, NY — Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Committee, announced a total of $5,292,242 in federal Department of Homeland Security Homeland Security Grant Program grants for emergency preparedness and counterterrorism efforts in Westchester and Rockland Counties.

“As New Yorkers know, threats of terrorism and natural disasters are all too real, and we need to have the resources necessary to protect our communities in the event of a crisis,” said Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester).

Westchester County will receive a $1,419,588 State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grant, a $2,649,658 Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) grant, and a $357,464 Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG).

“Protecting Westchester residents is our most important job in Government, and these funds will assist us on that vital mission,” said Westchester County Executive George Latimer. “Emergency preparedness is a major tenet of our Departments of Public Safety and Emergency Services, and this grant will help us get the equipment and training we need to help keep Westchester safe. All of Westchester thanks Congresswoman Lowey for her efforts to secure these resources.”

Rockland County will receive a $744,784 SHSP grant and a $120,748 EMPG.

The State Homeland Security Program provides funding to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism and other catastrophes. The Urban Areas Security Initiative focuses on enhancing regional preparedness in major metropolitan areas. The Emergency Management Performance Grant provides funding to states to assist state, local, territorial, and tribal governments in preparing for all hazards.
