'Critical Levels': New York Blood Supply Drops To 2 Days After July 4 Storms

New York Blood Center said storms cut collections by about 3,000 donations across New York and New Jersey.

NEW YORK — New York Blood Center is urging people across New York and New Jersey to donate blood after severe storms over the Fourth of July holiday disrupted collections and pushed the regional supply to what it described as critical levels.

According to New York Blood Center, excessive heat, widespread power outages, flooding and storm damage caused temporary closures and operational disruptions at multiple donor centers during the holiday week. While many sites have resumed operations, ongoing power outages, travel disruptions and additional storms in the forecast are expected to keep affecting blood donations in the days ahead.

As a result, New York Blood Center collected 4,500 blood donations last week, about 3,000 fewer than expected during what it described as an already challenging summer period for blood collections. The regional blood supply now stands at a two-day level, according to the organization. New York Blood Center said the ideal level is a five- to seven-day supply to help ensure hospitals have blood available when patients need it.

"The impact of these storms extends far beyond damaged buildings," said Jeannie Mascolino, Vice President of Operations at New York Blood Center. "Every canceled appointment and every donor who is unable to reach a donor center means fewer lifesaving blood donations are available for patients undergoing cancer treatment, trauma care, surgeries, organ transplants, and treatment for chronic illnesses. We need donors to help replenish the blood supply as quickly as possible."

Some donor centers remain affected by storm damage and utility outages while restoration efforts continue, according to New York Blood Center. The organization said more weather this week could further disrupt blood collections. It is asking all eligible donors to schedule an appointment as soon as possible, and said all blood types are urgently needed to help rebuild the blood supply.

New York Blood Center said blood donors can donate every 56 days, and platelet donors can give up to twice per month. It also said that, in light of recent updates to FDA guidance, more people than ever may now be eligible to donate.

People who want to check eligibility guidelines or make an appointment can call 1-800-933-2566 or visit nybc.org, according to New York Blood Center. The organization said donations are needed to help ensure hospitals have blood available for patients in need as storm-related disruptions continue.
