During her first year, Commissioner Elia visited well over 100 schools in New York in an effort to learn how schools here can be improved and how the State can help drive and support those improvements. As a result of these visits, she and the Board of Regents have engaged a new test vendor; created ELA/Math AIMHighNY Standards Review Committee; decoupled state assessments from teacher evaluation; provided new, alternative pathways to graduation; and instituted many other reforms which will be highlighted in her speech.
“It is an honor to have Commissioner Elia address the critical topic of strengthening our schools at a pivotal time for our educational system,” said Shelley Wepner, dean of Manhattanville’s School of Education, which is co-sponsoring the event along with the Teacher Center of Central Westchester, and Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES.
