Fifth Annual HHS Field of Honor Opens in Honor of Sergeant Joseph Lemm

Harrison High School Marching Band Honors Veterans Every Year With Flags of Remembrance

The Harrison High School Marching Band opened the fifth annual Field of Honor with a theme of “The Stories They Tell.” The Field of Honor is a memorial sponsored annually in recognition of duty, service, and sacrifice as exemplified by Veterans everywhere. The HHS Band is honored to dedicate this year’s Field of Honor in memory of Harrison’s Sergeant Joseph Lemm.

In addition to local veterans, Harrison High School was honored to welcome Harrison veteran Ben DeFonce, Harrison Town/Mayor Ron Belmont, New York State Senator George Latimer, New York State Assemblyman David Buchwald, a representative of County Executive Rob Astorino’s office, Christine Lemm and Brooke Chaco – wife and daughter of Sergeant Lemm, Harrison veterans, administrators, and students.

In addition, donors and veterans are invited to email a picture, a story and perhaps a digital artifact of the honoree to be added to the Wall of Remembrance Project at Harrison High School. Students are also excited to add a dinner for veterans in May to hear many of the stories and remembrances in person.

Students developed the idea of “The Stories They Tell” as a companion idea to the popular novel The Things They Carried written by Tim O’Brien, taught in the 11th grade English classes and as a continuation of the stories they remembered from the World War II veterans they met at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, when the HHS Band traveled to Hawaii in December of 2012 for the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Memorial.

Flags are sponsored and solemnly displayed in precision rows on the front lawn of Harrison High School through Memorial Day.
