Firehouse Party, Rec Winter Programs: Harrison Mayor

how to get involved giving back to the community; how to pile leaves for disposal and more

From the Mayor and Town Hall, Dec. 5, 2017

This year’s holiday celebration kickoffs were a big success. From candy canes to carolers and Santa’s arrival, both West Harrison and Downtown Harrison celebrated in style. The hot chocolate flowed in West Harrison as Frosty the Snowman visited with residents, young and old. Choral groups entertained the crowds in Downtown Harrison culminating in the lighting of the Christmas tree and menorah. It was great to see so many new friends and familiar faces as these are the occasions that highlight the true meaning of the season. Both events did a wonderful job reflecting the charm and magic that the holidays should bring to us all.

As we gather this holiday season, and reflect on the good tidings of the past year, I encourage all residents to celebrate the spirit of giving. State and local organizations will be increasing their efforts to assist food banks and soup kitchens. Donating food, stocking shelves and feeding those in need are wonderful ways to volunteer your time and celebrate the spirit of generosity. For more information on how you can get involved, please call our Community Services Department at 670-3025.

On a related note, the Harrison Fire Department will hold their Holiday party on Saturday, December 9th from 10am-2pm. Santa will make an appearance at noon and there will be activities and refreshments served. All are welcome and attendees are asked to bring a new unwrapped toy that will be sent to victims of Hurricanes Maria and Irma. If you cannot attend the event but would like to donate a toy then you may drop it by the Fire House at any time.

To expedite the leaf collection process, our DPW Commissioner asks that residents remove all rocks, bottles, branches and other debris, take leaves to the curb and avoid parking on or around the piles. It is also important that leaves are not placed in the roadway or in the storm drains or catch basins, as this may cause flooding. Thank you for your cooperation.

Our Recreation Department is currently taking applications for winter programs. Back by popular demand, basketball, archery and Nerf soccer clinics will be offered in January. Please remember that parents must have current ID cards to register children for all programs. 2018 cards are now available for purchase. Proof of residency required. For more information, call Leo Mintzer Center at 949-5265 or Sollazzo Center at 670-3039.

In closing, I am happy to report that once again Harrison has been listed among the top 20 safest cities, in New York, by safewise.com, a leading online authority that evaluates safety and home security.

Safewise reviewed 2017 FBI crime report statistics and population data and based their findings on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. I’m grateful for the hard work and dedication of our police department and look forward to maintaining this impressive distinction for years to come.
