Groundwater Contamination At Westchester County Airport

County officials await more tests.

HARRISON, NY — A monitoring well at Westchester County Airport has levels of a chemical believed to be from fire-fighting foam that are far above normal. Now county officials are awaiting the results of more tests.

The Kensico Reservoir is right across I-684 from the airport, but state officials see no sign the contamination has traveled there, according to The Journal News.

“We are currently working with the New York State Department of Environment Conservation (DEC) on this issue," said spokeswoman Catherine Cioffi. "We are in constant communication with the DEC. The DEC has informed us that samples collected from the ground water monitoring wells, located at the airport that were tested by the County at the DEC’s request, need to be validated. We are currently in that process and should have the results, and more information, in about three weeks. Additionally, it is our intention to fully clean up any issues with ground water pollution as quickly as we can.”
