Harrison High School Honors Writers Among Us

At the annual Writers Among Us breakfast, students who had contributed to the Harrison High School Literary Magazine Imagine and the school newspaper Husky Herald were honored.

“As writers, we value student composition, creative thought, and contributions to the artistic environment,” said Adolfo Viruet, Editor-In-Chief of the magazine along with members of the editorial board Kiera Cutri, Brianna Jackman and Harrison Sakai. “We believe that creativity is an important unifying factor among all types of students and can broaden our cultural and artistic perspectives.”

This year’s theme for Imagine was “Pushing Boundaries”. The students and teachers in the literary magazine club engaged in “Lit Mag Swaps” with schools across the country, asking for copies of their magazine in return for a copy of Harrison’s magazine.

“The magazines we received from other schools made us completely rethink and question what our magazine had been in the past,” said HHS English teacher and club advisor Kimberly Grogan. “We realized we were complacent. Suddenly Imagine looked so “student-publication-y” compared to the authentic, professional feel of the magazines we received.”

The results included a new size with glossy paper, enhanced page design, and an editor’s note.

“Ultimately, what we’ve learned from all of this is that writing and creativity is in fact our vehicle for transcending differences and pushing boundaries,” said Grogan. “Pushing boundaries means so much more than being edgy or crossing a line. Instead, it means erasing the flimsy lines that come between is and focusing on what unites us – our love for writing and student expression.”

For the third year in a row, Harrison High School’s students produced newspaper Husky Herald received a First Place designation in the American Scholastic’s Press Association’s Scholastic Newspaper Awards. The newspaper’s advisor is HHS English teacher Gary Glauber and the Husky Herald Editor-in-Chief is Kendall Gaines, with managing editors Richa Mehra and Jack Roscho.

In a letter congratulating Harrison, the competition judge said, "You have an excellent school newspaper, which shows the creativity and journalistic knowledge of your editors, reporters, writers, photographers, layout/graphics designers and advisor. Congratulations on winning a First Place award. Best of luck and continued success to all."
