Harrison High School Footlight Players Set To Perform American Classic March 5-8 at the HPAC

The Harrison High School Footlight Players are proud to present the musical Damn Yankees on March 5th, 6th, and 7th at 7pm and March 7th and 8th at 1pm in the Harrison High School Performing Arts Center. The musical is based on the novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant” by Douglass Wallop with the words and music for the musical by Richard Alder and Jerry Ross and the book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop. Tickets can be purchased at www.myschoolbucks.com. Once logged in, click “School Store” and select “Browse All Items”, then select your preferred show date and time. If you do not have an account, you may create one under “Sign Up Today”. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on the day of the performance.
The musical Damn Yankees focuses on Joe Boyd, a longtime Washington Senators fan, who tells his wife Meg (Six Months Out of Every Year) that things would be different if the Senators “just had a long ball hitter.” Joe is approached by a shady salesman named Mr. Applegate, who is really the devil. Applegate offers Joe the opportunity to become young “Joe Hardy” – the hitting phenom the Senators need. Joe accepts the deal, leaves his wife Meg (Goodbye Old Girl), and sells his soul to the devil. Joe will play for the Senators but strikes a provisional clause in the deal that he has until September 25th at 9:00 pm, the last day of the season, to decide if he will stay Joe Hardy forever.
The woeful Senators are vowing to play as hard as they can (Heart) when Joe Hardy appears on the scene and the fortunes of the Senators begin to change. Even the press, with the writings of the spunky reporter Gloria (Sholess Joe from Hannibal, Mo.), is taking notice. As Young Joe’s success begins to rise, he is drawn to Meg – a woman who is pining for her lost husband. Applegate fears that he is losing his protégé and enlists the services of the temptress Lola (Whatever Lola Wants Lola Gets) to coax Joe back into the fold. Joe’s love for Meg proves too strong a bond for even Lola, and Applegate is forced to try a new tactic. Applegate floats a rumor that Joe is actually a con artist name “Shifty McCoy” and Gloria writes the story that causes Joe to be arrested.

Joe’s court date is the day before the Senators final game (The Game) and the day before the deal Joe made with Applegate is scheduled to end. Joe attempts to take the stand but cannot prove his identity as he is not really Joe Hardy. Lola attempts to help Joe by testifying on his behalf but to no avail. Gloria suggests that Mr. Applegate take the stand. Even with all of these shenanigans, Joe, with the help of Lola, is able to get to the stadium. Applegate believes he has sealed the deal and Joe will remain with him and the Senators forever but Joe refuses. Joe transforms into Old Joe Boyd who hits the home run and wins the pennant….and the girl.
