HHS Model Congress Team Wins Eight Awards at Yale

The Harrison High School Model Congress team competed in the Yale Model Congress and returned with a total of eight awards, including one best delegate, four honorable mentions, and three best legislation awards. This was the second time Harrison High School has competed at this particular conference.

Nutsa Beradze- Purple House Education and Workforce

David Giff- Red House Transportation and Infrastructure

Joshua Gomez-Cruz- Blue House Financial Services

Remy Rabin- Blue House Education and Workforce

Best Legislation Recipients:

Aidan Lefkowitz- Red House Foreign Affairs

Parker Gibbons- Purple House Intelligence

Ben Lovinger- Purple House Homeland Security

The Yale Model Congress was founded in 1993 by a group of Yale undergraduates who hoped to foster an appreciation for American democracy in high school students and inspire them to be active citizen, according to the organization’s website. For 25 years, they have furthered this mission by hosting hundreds of delegates from across the country for a unique educational experience unlike that received in a traditional classroom setting. At the conference, delegates assume the responsibilities of our elected officials and attempt to address the nation’s most pressing issues.

This was a very special year for Harrison High School with an increase in freshman and sophomore participation in the club. Students were able to participate in robust debate about current political issues, while exploring the Yale campus.

“This conference was an exciting start to our 2018-2019 seasons of competition,” said Club Vice- President Matthew Griff, “The four awards from freshman students was incredible to see considering we focused much of the year on practicing with these students. Personally, this competition has enabled me to take what I have learned in my classes at Harrison High School as well as my learning outside of school into a competition based setting. I was surrounded by many like-minded students who all had something interesting to add to the discussion.”

The Harrison High School Model Congress team has many exciting conferences in this upcoming year including Harvard Model and the University of Pennsylvania Model Congress Conferences.
