Congratulations to Harrison High School senior Danny DeBois on becoming part of Lincoln-Douglas debate history by winning the National Tournament of Champions in Lexington, Kentucky. Danny is the first Lincoln-Douglas debater from New York to win the Tournament of Champions in 25 years and only the fifth New York LD debater to ever claim the championship. This win solidifies his status as the #1 Lincoln-Debater in the country.
The TOC is widely considered the most prestigious debate tournament in the United States. To qualify, students must win or reach elimination rounds at a minimum of two highly competitive tournaments during the regular debate season. The top 90-100 debaters from around the nation compete for the TOC championships.
Most high school debaters on the national circuit attempt to qualify for the TOC at some point in their four-year debate careers. According to HHS Debate Team advisor Chetan Hertzig, “Reaching elimination rounds is considered a major accomplishment and winning the whole tournament is truly an incredible achievement.”
