HHS Sophomore Wins Third Place in Kenneth Gambone Writing Contest

Harrison High School's Tanya Reyes Submitted Two Pieces for the LILAC Contest

Harrison High School sophomore Tanya Reyes won Third Place in the Kenneth F. Gambone Writing contest. The Long Island Language Arts Council (LILAC) has students submit two pieces of work. The first was a timed on-demand piece that focused on a theme inspired by this year's Olympic Games - "The more you dream, the further you get" by Michael Phelps. The second was a student's choice to choose one of their best pieces of writing and submit it to the LILAC Gambone Writing committee. Tanya submitted her poem "Four Years Ago..."

Many of Harrison High School’s Creative Writing students have had their work submitted for publication this year. This is a specific objective of Kimberly Grogan who teaches Creative Writing.

“I have my students complete a Publication Proposal every quarter in Creative Writing,” she said. “This entails reviewing a compiled list of publishing opportunities and contests I've researched and identifying an opportunity or contest that you "would" submit your work to. Students must identify which piece of their writing they would submit and why (pieces can be written in class or outside of class). The hope is that if students have to go through all of the work of completing the Publication Proposal, they will actually submit their work."
