The White Plains Pre Med program provides students the opportunity to work in a small group with medical doctors from a variety of fields. Students from Harrison as well as Scarsdale, Byram Hills and White Plains meet every Wednesday for two hours in the afternoon during two sessions in the school year. The program focuses on a hands-on distinctive learning opportunity each week, with medical specialists in that particular field leading the program.
The doctors have focused their discussion on both the medicine they practice and balancing their professional life with their personal lives.
The students who are currently enrolled in the Fall session have remarked on a few of the sessions they have been a part of such Gastroenterology and Radiology but are most excited about the session involving surgery and the robotics used in surgery. They said it was a unique way to learn about many of these fields and helps in solidifying a decision to study Pre-Med in college.
“This program allows students to glimpse the challenging and dynamic world of medicine and the dedication required of medical doctors,” said Joan O’Keeffe, Harrison’s Director of Science and Technology.
O’Keeffe said interest in the program has grown rapidly at Harrison High School. Harrison may send only five students each year.
