Improper Recycling Costing Harrison Extra Money: Mayor's Column

In a prior Mayor’s Column, I informed residents of the importance of proper recycling practices. Unfortunately, the Town is experiencing difficulties with improperly segregated recycling for collection.

Recently, this resulted in two full containers being reclassified as Municipal Solid Waste instead of recycling and it resulted in additional disposal costs to the Town.

The majority of the issues appear to be with the paper collections. Paper recycling has been placed in plastic bags. This is not permitted and the quantity is easily visible to county inspectors who then examine the load.

The inspectors also find plastic and glass bottles, metal food containers etc. mixed in with the paper. This results in the load being reclassified. The paper should be placed in a bin, tied in bundles or placed in a cardboard box.

No plastic bags are permissible.

I am requesting that residents properly segregate their household materials before placing them curbside.

The Town will be placing stickers on any curbside load which does not comply, andthe load will not be collected.

Please take note of the following Department of Public Works announcement: Be advised that any recycling that is mixed will be tagged and will not be collected until properly separated and then will be collected on the next scheduled collection day. Recycling is accepted in the standard Town Blue Bins or a recycle container that does not exceed 35 gallons.

I am happy to report that the Harrison Police Department added several new police officers to the force. A ceremony recently took place in Town Halland Randy Bakay, Michael Basciano, Agron Biberaj, Michael DiSante,Christopher Oliva, Ami Postiglione and Justin Caraballosa will were sworn in as new officers and will be attending the police academy. I am completely confident that our new police officers will carry out their duties in aprofessional manner and will be an asset to the Town/Village of Harrison asthey protect and serve our community.

The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, August 3rd. Harrison’s new Police Chief, Joe Yasinski, will be joining me this week and we will be at Lago Ristorante and Wine Bar located at 97 Lake Street in West Harrison. We will be at this location from 12:30 to 1:30 and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
