Memorial Day Pickup; County Shredder: Mayor Belmont

plus a couple of reminders to residents about their dogs

From Mayor Ron Belmont

Since the late 1960s, the Glenn D. Loucks Memorial Games have been held in White Plains. This well attended track and field event has become one of the premiere events in the United States. The 2018 Games were held on May 10-12 and once again they provided rigorous competition for many participants. Teams from New York State, the entire US eastern seaboard region as well as areas in Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec and Bermuda compete each year. This year, Harrison High School student, Robert Blue won the long jump with a personal best of 22-10-.75. He also finished 3 rd in the boys triple jump (47-1.25). Blue’s teammate Ian Santiago came in fifth (44-1.25). Congratulations to both boys on this very impressive showing.

The Town/Village of Harrison requires all dog owners to obtain a dog license. State law mandates that we are only allowed to issue licenses to Harrison residents and all dogs, four months of age or older, must have a license. Proof of current rabies shots are required and a certificate of proof is required if the dog is spayed or neutered. The fee is as follows: spayed/neutered dogs ($13.00), un-spayed/un-neutered dogs ($21.00). Guide dogs, war dogs, hearing dogs and service dogs are exempt from fees.

Licenses must be renewed, annually. Once licensed, the dog owner will receive a Town of Harrison ID tag. This tag should be affixed to the dog’s collar at all times. The tag number identifies the dog and its owner.

I would like to remind residents of the following information from our Department of Public Works: In addition to glass, plastics (numbers 1-7) and metal containers, residents may include beverage cartons to their commingled recycling. Recyclable beverage cartons consist predominantly of cardboard and include waxy cartons used for juice and milk (sometimes called gable-top containers), soup and broth, cream and egg substitutes.

Although mostly made of cardboard, the cartons should be included with other recyclable beverage containers made of glass, plastic and metal for collection. They should not be included with paper and cardboard recyclables.

As a reminder, Westchester County will be returning to Harrison on Tuesday, June 5 th to assist residents with destroying unwanted personal papers and documents. The shredder will be stationed at 170 Webster Avenue (Brentwood Pool Lot) from 10am to 1pm. Please be advised that the following restrictions apply: Residents can bring up to 4 file size (10 x 12 x 15) boxes of confidential papers per household. Please remove all large binder clips and covers. In extreme weather, events may be cancelled or terminated early. Please call the county's Recycling Helpline at (914) 813- 5425 to check on a cancellation or early closure.

In closing, I would like to bring your attention to an issue that has come up every year, at this time. Spring is upon us and dog owners may be walking their pets more frequently in and around our neighborhoods. In an effort to be courteous, dog walkers should carry disposable waste bags and clean up after their pets. Used dog waste bags should not be left in neighbor’s trash cans or recycling bins and should not be thrown into the storm drains on the streets and roadways. Proper disposal of dog waste is a must and every dog owner should participate.

The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, May 18 th I will be at Delfino’s located at 60 Halstead Avenue in Downtown Harrison. I will be joined by newly elected State Senator Shelley Mayer. We will be at these locations from 12:30 to 1:30 and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
