From Mayor Ron Belmont

It is my pleasure to announce that nominations are currently being accepted for the Town/Village of Harrison’s 2018 Citizen of the Year Award. This honor will go to a Harrison resident who consistently demonstrates a cooperative spirit and promotes, by example, leadership, community pride and philanthropy. Significant contributions and achievements will be evaluated. The Award will be presented on Monday, October 8th at the Its Great to Live in Harrison/Columbus Day celebration. Please send nominations to Citizen of the Year Committee, c/o Gerry Salvo, Superintendent of Recreation, 1 Heineman Place, Harrison, NY 10528. In order to be eligible, nominations must be received no later than September 4, 2018.

I would like to take this time to thank the Jewish Community Center of Harrison for their support with the Harrison Food Pantry. The JCC has been helping with deliveries, unloading pallets of food and stocking groceries. Not only has this been a tremendous help to our food pantry staff, it has provided much needed assistance to many residents and their families.

Congratulations are in order for the Harrison Recreation Swim Team. The Harrison Swim Team recently competed in the Westchester County Swim Conference Championship Meet and came in 15 th place, beating out some very impressive teams in the Conference and finishing in the best position since the team’s inception. During the season, the Harrison team achieved Division 4 Champion status and, as a result, is moving up to Division 3 next season. This is the team’s second consecutive move up! Congrats to all the swimmers for a great season and to Coach Dottie Klein for her dedication and leadership.

The Harrison Recreation Day Camp finished this year’s summer session with a wonderful production of favorite songs and clever dance numbers. The camp meets for six weeks, during the summer months, and offers daily field trips, swimming, sports, musical enrichment and arts and crafts. The stage production is held at the end of the season and is always entertaining. Congratulations to the campers, counselors and mentors for providing the audience with a truly fantastic show.

Please make note of the following announcement from our Department of Public Works: Your recycling will not be picked up if not properly separated: Paper items should not be mixed with commingled items (glass, bottles, cans) nor should plastic bags be used to place recycling at curbside as they are not currently accepted by the County.

In an ongoing effort to keep Harrison looking its best, I encourage all residents to do their part in keeping Harrison a clean and beautiful community. Taking care of your surroundings doesn’t need to be overwhelming. There are many ways you can do your part in preserving an aesthetically pleasing environment. Some easy suggestions include the proper disposal of yard and household waste (this information can be found on our Town’s website in the Department of Public Works’ Guide to Recycling and Solid Waste Disposal.

In closing, please make note that sewer testing, in the Town/Village of Harrison, is still in effect.

The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, August 17th and I will be at the West Harrison Pool Complex in West Harrison. On Friday, August 24th I will be at Porta Napoli located at 261 Halstead Avenue in Harrison. I will be at these locations from 12:30 to 1:30 and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
