NY Flags Will Fly at Half-Staff Aug. 7 for Slain General
U.S. Army Major General Harold Greene, a native New Yorker, was killed in Afghanistan Aug. 5.

Flags on state government buildings will be flown at half-staff on Thursday, August 7, 2014, in honor of U.S. Army Major General Harold J. Greene.
In an “insider attack,” Greene was killed by a shooter in an Afghan army uniform, who wounded 14 others before he was killed. The attack was near Kabul,according to the LA Times.
He was the the Deputy for Acquisition and Systems Management, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology). On his first war-zone deployment , he and was preparing Afghan forces for when U.S.-coalition troops leave.

“It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Major General Harold J. Greene,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “Major General Greene was an Albany native who earned his commission as an engineer officer shortly after graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and he dedicated more than 30 years of his life in service to his country. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I offer my thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of Major General Greene. We will never forget his sacrifice, and we will honor his service with pride.”
