Poetry Reading October 28 at Manhattanville Examines Gay Student’s Suicide

Suzanne Parker to read from her book, "Viral," at Manhattanville College on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. Poems probe gay student's suicide.

Award-winning poet Suzanne Parker will read from her collection of poems, "Viral," at Manhattanville College on Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. in Reid Castle. Parker's poems examine, with bold empathy, the death of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementer, who took his own life following his roommate’s use of a webcam and the Internet to secretly show Tyler’s private moments with another man. Six years ago the suicide generated headlines across the nation.

Parker is widely published and admired as a poet, with her latest work, Feed, winning the 2016 Tupelo Press Sunken Garden Chapbook Award. "Viral" was a Lambda Literary Award finalist.

The Parker reading marks the second of three engaging “Meet the Writers” events, sponsored by Manhattanville’s MFA in creative writing program (www.mville.edu/admissions/graduate-admissions/mfa-creative-writing.com). The first was a reading by Edwidge Danticat, on September 30. The last will be on Nov. 21, a reading by Kate Daloz, author of “We Are As Gods: Back to the Land in the 1970s on the Quest for a New America.”
