Pre-School, Veterans Day Schedules: Harrison Mayor's Column

Some residents have been prematurely leaving their garbage and recyclables curb side, creating an unattractive aesthetic.

From Mayor Ron Belmont

I would like to take this time to offer words of comfort and hope. The attack that took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA claimed innocent lives and injured several more. Each life is cherished and, through these dark days, I have been deeply moved by the outpouring of love, friendship and faith I have witnessed not only in Pennsylvania, but in our own community as well. I encourage all our residents, from all faiths, to draw strength from the sense of community we have in Harrison, especially now. My hope is that the Tree of Life congregation finds solace in celebrating the lives of those lost and that our community embraces each other as we move toward better times.

To avoid the rush, please be aware that our area pre-school programs will be accepting applications, in November and December, for new families interested in the fall 2019 programs (2019-2020 school year). To avoid being excluded, contact any one of our excellent early childhood organizations (Harrison Children’s Center, St. Gregory the Great, Webster Avenue Nursery School, Harrison Presbyterian Nursery School, Purchase Children’s Center, and Memorial Community Church Nursery School, to name a few).

I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to refer to our sanitation guidelines regarding the time to bring containers to the curb for pick up. My office has become aware that some residents have been prematurely leaving their garbage and recyclables curb side, creating an unattractive aesthetic. According to our Recycling and Solid Waste Disposal Guide, all garbage must be set out in containers before 6:00 a.m. on the day of collection, or after 5:00 p.m. the evening before collection.

As a reminder, on November 12 (Veterans Day Holiday) Town Hall will be closed. Please make note of the sanitation schedule change for that week: Garbage and recycling normally collected on Monday, November 12, will be collected on Tuesday, November 13. Garbage and recycling normally collected on Tuesday, November 13, will be collected on Wednesday, November 14. There will be no Bulk Trash collected on Wednesday, November 14.

Recently, all three of Harrison’s Fire Departments held their annual inspections and I am happy to report that the condition of all fire department apparatus is outstanding. Each Department should be commended for their commitment to excellence.

“Call to Stewardship” will be the theme of the 2018 Annual Thanksgiving Service sponsored by the Interfaith Congregational Laymen’s Committee of Harrison (ICLC), to be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at The Greek Orthodox Church of Our Savior in Rye. As religions are diverse, vibrant and steeped in traditions, the aim of the ICLC has always been to encourage acceptance and understanding of the essential belief systems and practices of each faith. Each year, the Committee extends an invitation, to the entire Harrison community, to become familiar with and celebrate the richness and value in all faiths. All are welcome.

The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, November 9th and I will be at Sophia’s located at 212 Harrison Avenue in downtown Harrison. On Friday, November 30 th , I will be at Silver Lake Cafe located at 17 Taylor Square in West Harrison. I will be at these locations from 12:30 to 1:30 and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
