Peter Roth Internship
The Paley Center for Media’s inaugural Peter Roth Internship Program hopes to “inspire the next generation of television professionals to embody Peter Roth’s commitment to innovative storytelling, love for writers, passion for the art form of television, and the critical importance of nurturing a diverse array of creative voices and portrayals on television.”
Created with the support of Ava DuVernay, JJ Abrams, and others, the apprenticeship will provide unparalleled hands-on learning opportunities in the world of television. Wilson is one of 20 selected through a highly competitive process for this paid apprenticeship.
SUNY ACT
Wilson was chosen for the prestigious State University of New York Association of Council Members and College Trustees Excellence and Student Initiative Scholarship from a select group of students with one representative from each SUNY campus. This scholarship recognizes her outstanding academic performance and extraordinary commitment to her campus and community.
The award is based on Wilson’s 3.9 GPA, but also on her contribution to the campus community in producing the 2021 POV Fest for the Playwriting and Screenwriting and Film majors/minors. The event was quite spectacular and brought together students from across campus disciplines at a time when community was sorely needed.
Further contributions to Purchase include Wilson’s current project, initiating the charter of the first Women in Animation (WIA) club at a SUNY campus. The group begins at Purchase in the Fall ’21 semester and is part of a global non-profit that provides guidance and resources to under-represented groups in the animation industry.
Wilson also serves as the Student Representative for Purchase College at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) following her extensive participation at the Kennedy Center as a Playwriting Intensive selected writer, Arts Administration Intern, and ASPIRE/LORT Fellow.
Other roles include participation in the inaugural Purchase College Leadership Institute (PCLI) through the Office of Community Engagement and Social Media Marketing intern at the Office for Career Development.
NAACP: Empowering Imagination
Adding to ACT award, Wilson was also selected as one of just twenty recipients nationally for the Empowering Imagination Scholarship powered by Kering. The NAACP awards the $5000 scholarship to distinguished college students majoring in creative fields.
“Needless to say, Playwriting and Screenwriting and the School of Film and Media Studies are quite proud of Laila, but also grateful for all she has done for the campus that will remain after she graduates. We wish her great success and of course will continue to support her as she pursues new goals,” says Dean Bell, associate professor and co-chair of the Playwriting and Screenwriting program.
