Purchase College Offers Innovative Summer Programs for Grades 4-12 New Programs include Museum Curators, 3-D Video Game Creation, and STEM
This summer children and young adults in grades 4 through 12 have even more options for unique, enriching, and exciting programs.
From creating apps, to filmmaking to designing video games, to studying architecture or journalism, the Youth and Precollege Programs in the Arts at Purchase College serve a wide-range of interests.
New programs include Neu Curators, which offers high school students in grades 9 through 12 the unique opportunity to learn all about being a museum curator at the Neuberger Museum of Art, one of the 10 largest university museums in the country. The program includes exhibition design, collecting, working with artists, and other important skills. This is the only program of its kind in the New York area, and one of only two in the country for high-school aged students.

This summer, Purchase is launching STEM Scholars, a six-week summer immersion in the sciences and mathematics for rising juniors and seniors. Partnering with Learn America, the students will gain research experience in a university setting and earn three college credits. Participants will choose between studying geological and climate processes on Mars, art forensics, biochemistry, or robotics.
Also new this year is the 3-D Video Game and Makers Lab Creations workshop. Participants in grades 4 through 8 can develop their own game concept, design an action figure, or even jewelry using professional-level modeling software.

In addition to spending the summer on a vibrant college campus, the programs, which are two or four weeks long, give students the chance to work with artists and teachers at the top of their fields, from former editors at Marvel Comics, to current professors at Purchase’s renowned arts conservatories. Often called a life-changing experience by participants, the summer is the perfect time for students to develop new skills and challenge themselves, all in a supportive, creative environment.
Kelly Jackson, director of continuing education at Purchase College, said, “Every summer I am amazed and gratified by the accomplishments of the Summer Youth and Precollege Programs in the Arts students. Working with our dedicated instructors, who are all top-level professionals and experienced educators, the students have a terrific time while producing incredible artwork, designs, films, and original songs in just a few weeks. I’m excited to launch three new programs this summer and look forward to celebrating the students’ achievements in these new areas.”
