Regulation Not Enough Time For Recreation Championship

The Harrison Recreation championship game went down to the final seconds of overtime before the Redeem Team IV beat the T-Timers 53-52.

Harrison Recreation held its annual championship for the high school division Friday night at Louis M. Kline Middle School. The team’s are made up mostly of Harrison kids who grew up playing in the league.

The T-Timers, made up of Harrison High School seniors, mostly football players, was one team. The other was the Redeem Team IV, comprised mostly of upper classmen at the high school.

The first quarter belonged to the T-Timers as they held the Redeem Team IV to just three field goals and scored 15 points, all of which came from Gary Castelli and Sam Gioseffi.

With their backs against the wall early the Redeem Team IV looked to good defense and the long ball to get them back into the game. They hit four shots from beyond the arc, two of which came from Cory Calcagni giving the squad a 29-25 lead at halftime.

As good as the Redeem Team IV was offensively in the second quarter, they were equally as bad in the third scoring only two points. The T-Timers were able to come from behind and take a five point lead entering the final quarter.

The Redeem Team IV tied the game at 43 in the final seconds of regulation. The T-Timers had a chance to take the lead and win the game, but the team was unable to end the game in regulation.

With the score tied at 50 in overtime, the Redeem Team IV’s point guard Danny Johansen took the ball up with 26 seconds remaining and began to let the clock tick down. With 11 seconds left Johansen pitched the ball to Jake Soloman who hit a game winning three-pointer.

The T-Timers Head Coach Robbie Mulderrig called a timeout with six seconds left to set up a play to tie the game. Castelli had an opportunity but the shot fell short, giving the Redeem Team IV the 53-52 victory and the championship win.

Castelli led all scorers with 16 and Gioseffi added 9 for the T-Timers. The Redeem Team IV had three players in double figures, both Jack McCarthy and Calcagni scored 15 and Soloman added 13.
