Hike Silver Lake Trail This Weekend in West Harrison
This is a 3-mile trail that loops around Silver Lake and makes for an easy hike with some nice views.
Silver Lake Preserve Trail is a 3-mile loop trail, good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round and leashed dogs are allowed on the trail too. The trail is a favorite of locals like Richard Viscome, who has been visiting the park for over 50 years.
The hiking trail runs through forest and loops around the circumference of Silver Lake. The trail moves up a ridge which affords some nice lake views. According to Trails.com, the hike begins at the parking lot's southern end and there are markers indicating "Heritage Trail."
The Town/Village of Harrison website chronicles some of the history of Silver Lake. According to the site, slavery did exist in early Harrison. An old New York newspaper advertisement dated 6th August, 1772 (sic) reads:
"Runaway from Nathan Field of Harrison's Purchase in the Township of Rye, a negro called "Plato." Twenty shillings reward." The slaves were freed by the Quakers between 1773 and 1783 and were given land to farm in the Stony Hill area in West Harrison by one of the friends, Frederick Stephens. An old church and a cemetery existed there.
That's some history worth contemplating while you're on the 3-mile hike this weekend.Find out what's happening in Harrisonfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
