Two HHS Science Research Students Place at WESEF

Juniors Tasha Garayo and Emma Abramson Are Recognized at Westchester Science and Engineering Fair

Congratulations to Harrison High School juniors Tasha Garayo and Emma Abramson on their outstanding performance at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF). WESEF is a regional science research competition for Westchester and Putnam Counties. Both students were able to use the Large Format Printer, donated by the Harrison Educational Foundation, to compile their projection information and construct their display boards in the most professional manner.

Tasha won the Greg Horrace Award for Medicine – given to an outstanding project by a minority and she received a small financial scholarship. Emma placed fourth in the category of Medicine and Health. Harrison High School was also awarded a microscope from Carl Zeiss manufacturers.

“It is important to note that these students are only juniors who will be continuing with the program over the summer and next year,” said Joan O’Keeffe, Director of Science and Technology for the Harrison Central School District. “As they begin to work with mentors in the field, both of these young ladies can take their work to the next level.”

Ms. O’Keeffe was also excited to share that there were nearly 30 sophomores in the HHS Science Research program who plan to advance to the second year of the course – under the guidance of HHS teachers Allison Blunt and Randy Gunnell. She is confident that there will be even more HHS Science students at WESEF next year.

Tasha and Emma, along with the other science research students will be presenting their work at the annual HHS Science Symposium on April 25th, 2016 at Harrison High School.
