U.S. Congresswoman Nita Lowey Visits S.J. Preston Elementary

The Student Council was proud to welcome United States Congresswoman Nita Lowey to Preston Elementary School on March 24.  Congresswoman Lowey, who represents New York’s 17th District comprised of central and northwestern Westchester County and all of Rockland County, is serving her thirteenth consecutive term in the United States House of Representatives.

Preston Student Council President Jennifer Vukel and Corresponding Secretary Peyton Gartner, under the guidance of advisors Thomasine Mastrantoni and Joseph Gottschalk, wrote a letter asking if the Congresswoman would be willing to speak to the Student Council and possibly the third, fourth, and fifth grade students who have been studying local, state, and federal government.

“This coming year we would appreciate it if we had a female elected representative come to talk with us,” Vukel and Gartner said in a letter to Mrs. Lowey.  “We would really like to hear a woman’s point of view on government.  As a grandmother of eight, and a previous PTA member, we believe that you have shown an interest in education.  It would be an honor to welcome you to Samuel J. Preston Elementary School, where we are young, but already interested in government and how it can help shape our future! “

Congresswoman Lowey spent over an hour with the students who had spent weeks researching Mrs. Lowey’s legislative agenda and leadership positions.  She is the highest ranking Democrat on the powerful Appropriations Committee.  The children asked complex questions about securing federal funds to help clean up the Long Island Sound and the Hudson River, education initiatives, transportation bills, and health care research.
