Youth Art Month; Spring Spruce-Up: Mayor's Column
plus fireplace safety and fire calls; mobile shredder; local Olympian and more

From the Mayor and Town Hall, February 26, 2018
In looking ahead, and thinking about the spring with great anticipation, I would like to bring your attention to this year’s annual Spring Spruce Up event. Please join the Town/Village of Harrison by coming out to show your support on Saturday, April 7 th or Sunday, April 8th. We will be tidying up our roadways, parks, wooded areas and streams. Target areas in Downtown Harrison include Ma Riis Park, Veteran’s Park, the stream behind LMK Middle School, Beaver Swamp Brook Corridor, and West Street (in the vicinity of the I-95 Bridge). Target areas in West Harrison include the Boulevard, various locations around Silver Lake and Underhill Avenue, and the Village Green.
Feel free to contact the Mayor’s Office with additional areas that may need attention. Clean up crew leaders will be at all locations and will provide lawn bags and instructions for sprucing up. Come full of energy and prepared to make a difference. For more information or to volunteer, please call Supervisor/Mayor Belmont at 670-3009 or visit the Supervisor/Mayor’s Office at Town Hall. Take pride in Harrison’s appearance and pitch in!!

This year’s Youth Art Month kicks off with a reception in Town Hall on Sunday, March 4th from 1 pm to 3 pm. All residents are invited. This is a wonderful annual event and I encourage all residents to visit our municipal building, throughout the month of March, and view the extraordinary talent from our youngest residents.
I would like to take this time to recognize Harrison resident, Alexia Paganini. Alexia is a sixteen year old figure skater and recently represented Switzerland (her father’s country) in the 2018 National Championships. She became the Swiss National Champion and went on to represent Switzerland in the Olympics in PyeongChang.

Congratulations to a wonderful athlete!
Be sure to mark your calendar for this year’s visit from the Westchester County Mobile Shredder. Residents may bring confidential personal papers, for shredding, to the MTA Lot (corner of Harrison and Halstead Ave) on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Residents can bring up to 4 file size (10 x 12 x 15) boxes of confidential papers per household. Please remove all large binder clips and covers. In extreme weather, events may be cancelled or terminated early. Please call the county's Recycling Helpline at (914) 813-5425 to check on a cancellation or early closure.
Given the cold weather we have had this season, I would like to bring your attention to fireplace safety. Our local fire departments have been responding to calls regarding fireplace mishaps. To prevent fires, the U.S. Fire Administration advises that chimneys and woodstoves receive regular inspection and cleaning by certified specialists. It is also important to insure that all chimneys are covered with a mesh screen to prevent lighted ash from floating out of the chimney and onto to nearby rooftops. If you need additional assistance, call your local fire department for more information.
The next “Lunch with the Mayor” is on Friday, February March 2nd. I will be at Emilio’s Ristorante located at 1 Colonial Place in Harrison. I will be at this location from 12:30 to 1:30 and look forward to meeting with residents and talking about issues facing our community.
