Hauppauge's Cosmetology Program Students Raise Funds for Long Island Island Charities
Hauppauge High School’s Cosmetology Class recently offered paraffin treatments to students and staff for a small service fee. The funds collected will be donated to the family of New York City Police Officer Paul Tuozzolo who was killed in the line of duty. Going forward, the students will provide hair, skin and nail treatment services for a minimal fee on a bimonthly basis with proceeds earmarked for various Long Island charities.
Hauppauge School District launched its Cosmetology Classroom at the High School last year. This special collaboration between Hauppauge High School and Eastern Suffolk BOCES prepares students to take the New York Cosmetology Licensing Exam. Students spend the first year of a required 1,000-hour, two-year program at Hauppauge High School and the second year at Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at Milliken Technical Center in Oakdale. They learn about all facets of cosmetology in the program – including hair, skin and nails – in addition to fulfilling their English and Science requirements for graduation, which are embedded into the curriculum. “This is a great opportunity for Hauppauge students to be able to complete the two-year Cosmetology Licensing Program,” stated Teacher Lara Andina.
“Offering the Cosmetology Class in the High School is a cost-saving measure for the District because it enables students to be educated in-house for the first year of the two-year program rather than transported daily to the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology at Milliken Technical Center,” described Hauppauge High School Principal Christine O’Connor.
