Hauppauge HS Chorus Teacher Sexually Abused Student: Police

The 53-year-old, also a leader in the New York Army National Guard, is accused of abusing a 16-year-old boy in 2017, police say.

MORICHES, NY - A Hauppauge High School teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student at his Moriches home, Suffolk Police said.

The now 18-year-old told detectives that when he was a 16-year-old student at Hauppauge High School he was sexually abused by his chorus teacher, Mark Kimes, at the teacher’s home, police said.

Following an investigation, detectives determined that 53-year-old Kimes had inappropriate contact with the teen while serving as his teacher, police said.

Kimes was arrested at his home at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. He was charged with first degree criminal sex act and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He was held overnight at the Seventh Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.

Kimes is also a chief warrant officer in the New York Army National Guard and commander of the 42nd Infantry Division Band, NBC 4 reported.

Kimes assisted with recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy and in 2013, he presented Hauppauge Board of Education members with the Employer Support for Guard and Reserve Award for always welcoming him back to the district with open arms when he returned from deployment.
