HAUPPAUGE JOINS THE CBS 2 WEATHERBUG(R) SCHOOLS NETWORK

WeatherBug Station Helps High School Provide Live, Local Weather Conditions to the Surrounding Community and Enhance Student Education

Hauppauge High School has joined the WeatherBug Schools Program. WeatherBug® (www.weatherbug.com) is the leading provider of consumer and professional weather products and services and operator of the largest weather observing and lightning network. The high school has installed a new WeatherBug weather station and has access to web-based educational software tools. The station is able to provide weather data for meteorological teams at CBS 2 and news stations across the country, to broadcast online and on-air. The weather station also will be used to enhance the STEM (science, technology and math) curriculum using the WeatherBug Achieve program.

Bringing the WeatherBug Schools Program to the school district was part of a collaborative effort between the Hauppauge Educational Foundation and Hauppauge Public Schools. The program will enable Hauppauge’s students to more effectively understand the science of meteorology.

“We are excited to be bringing a WeatherBug weather station to our school, because it will help bring science to life for our students,” said Robert J. Wankmuller, Hauppauge’s director of Science, Technology, and Research. “This weather station and the WeatherBug software will give the Hauppauge community the opportunity to further their knowledge about weather and climate by using current technological tools. The advanced warning of lightning and severe weather will help us to make critical decisions with regard to the safety of our students during athletics, transportation and other outdoor activities.”

The WeatherBug media partner in New York City, CBS 2, leverages the WeatherBug national network of tracking stations to offer Tri-State area residents the most local, up-to-the-second weather information available in New York and throughout the country. Now, CBS 2 will also be able to feature neighborhood-level reports from Hauppauge High School during its daily newscasts on-air and online.

The WeatherBug Schools Program is committed to helping protect schools and provide an engaging teaching tool for students nationwide. The WeatherBug interactive software program, WeatherBug Achieve, enables teachers to apply real-world conditions to help teach skills and concepts in math, science and geography. Teachers and students in K-12 have access to monitoring local weather conditions from any of the 8,000 WeatherBug sites across the country. Using WeatherBug Achieve, teachers also can create customized learning activities based on current and historical weather conditions from the WeatherBug stations and cameras located at the schools.
