Hauppauge Ranks among Nation’s Most Challenging High Schools

The Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that Hauppauge High School is ranked among the nation’s most challenging high schools. Hauppauge High School has achieved a New York State ranking of 51 and a national ranking of 607 in the Washington Post’s 2014 ranking for America’s Most Challenging High Schools.

The ranking is calculated by taking the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and dividing by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. This formula is called the “Challenge Index.” With a few exceptions, public schools that achieved a ratio of at least 1.000 – meaning they had as many tests as they had graduates – were put on the national list.

In 2014, only nine percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools reached that standard and earned placement on the list. Schools were ranked in order of ratio. Additional information regarding the ranking process is available at the link below:
